TIGHT - The World of Indian Bodybuilding

“Rather than being a one-dimensional film following the protagonist on his quest for glory, this multi-layered documentary looks at the lives of those involved in the increasingly popular sport, among them a bodybuilder in his 80s who was one of the early pioneers.” - Eastern Eye

Synopsis

Step into the booming world of Indian bodybuilding with Tight, a gripping documentary that follows Aji and a vibrant group of young bodybuilders from GM Fitness gym in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. As they compete in Mr. Universe-themed competitions across India, these athletes face challenges of corruption, discrimination, and societal expectations, all while pushing their limits to achieve greatness in a rapidly changing Indian society. Set to the mesmerizing original score by composer Sarathy Korwar, blending the sounds of Indian jazz, classical, and contemporary music, the film also sheds light on the harsh reality faced by female bodybuilders in India, who are often disowned by their families and communities for pursuing their passion. Tight offers an intimate look at their journey, revealing the dreams, aspirations, and conceptions of masculinity held by a new generation of young men; their willingness to turn their backs on tradition; and how much they are prepared to sacrifice, including their health, in the hopes of winning a better life.

Tight is more than just a story of muscles and competitions—it's a powerful exploration of what it means to be a young man in India today. As globalization transforms India's traditional, conservative society, the greased-up and bombastic yet brotherly world of bodybuilding is our window to see these changes playing out in the lives of ordinary young men.
